Tiphanie is proving to be a major asset at Physiomoves. She is calm and knowledgeable, which works especially well with children and older adults. She is just about licensed to perform acupuncture, something Physiotherapist Kristen (Pummell) Hoffman has been doing at our clinic since she passed all her exams in June 2011. September also saw Kristen tie the knot!

October: Our team provided free massages and education to everyone at the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation Great Pumpkin Run- what a beautiful, fun day!

November: Johnny, Barry and Tyler sported moustaches and raised over $300 for movember.ca. This month we are giving away a prize on behalf of the http://www.notquitesouthsurrey.com/ website, including an orange therapy ball, foam roller and a free massage from our RMT Barry Bereziak for anyone who leaves any comments on that fantastic website.

Functional Movement Screen

A few weeks ago, Physiomoves therapists attended a 3 day course with the goal of advancing their knowledge and skills in the areas of assessment and injury prevention. Heather, Jody, Johnny and Tyler obtained both the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) Certification and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) Certification.

The FMS is an exciting tool that allows your therapist to observe you perform seven movement tests that are key to normal function. A score is then generated which identifies the areas a person needs to target (e.g. stability or mobility of a particular region of the body. The FMS is used to identify people who are at risk of injury during physical training. Your therapist can prescribe a corrective exercise program to address your mobility and/or stability deficits based on your results of the FMS screen. The FMS score also predicts an athlete's performance capability. This tool can be used prior to starting a training program or at the end of your rehabilitation program. The SFMA is a more advanced screening tool that can only be studied and used by healthcare practioners such as Physiotherapists. This particular assessment is similar to an indepth orthopaedic exam. The SFMA is very useful in determining what movement patterns need to be corrected and how to prescribe the most appropriate corrective exercises.

Physiomoves is excited to be able to offer these new services to patients, athletes and sports teams who are interested in optimizing performance and reducing the risk of injury.

Visit www.functionalmovement.com for more information.

K-Taping now available at Physiomoves

Physiotherapists Kristen Pummell and Tyler Dumont recently completed an intensive weekend K-Taping Pro Course in Vancouver, BC. K-Tape is an elastic tape that is water resistant, breathable and can be worn up to 7 days. K-Tape has 2 effects: 1) it stimulates blood flow and lymph flow to aid in the healing process and 2) it stimulates skin receptors to reduce pain and help the body sense position and movement. K-Taping can be used in the treatment of a variety of conditions such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, ligament sprains and muscle strains (see http://www.k-taping.eu/ for more information). K-Taping is now in stock at Physiomoves and can be offered to our clients.

Do you suffer from headaches? We love the Fall season- the smell of the crisp, cooler air, the many colours on the trees, and the busy-ness of back to school and activities.

This month, therapists from Physiomoves have provided on-field therapy to young soccer players in our community. We also hosted a "Principles of Bike Fit and Treatment of Cycling Injuries" workshop for Physiotherapists from around the Lower Mainland last weekend at our clinic. We warmly welcome our new main receptionist, Kelsey, who started fulltime as well.

We are accepting new clients of any age and condition. If you have an injury related to an auto accident, work, sports or aging- we would be happy to help you get back to moving your body better. Life at Physio Moves is hopping along. A quick look at the referrals sent to us in July reveals that over 30% of new clients heard about us from caring friends and family who wanted to make sure their loved ones came to Physiomoves for the best treatment possible. Month after month, referrals from family, friends, co-workers and word of mouth in the neighbourhood continue to be our #1 source of referrals. What a humbling, wonderful compliment- we are so grateful to all of you!

We also treated patients referred to us by Physicians, Surgeons, Chiropractors, other Physiotherapists, Naturopathic Doctors, Personal Trainers, and Massage Therapists from across the Semiahmoo Peninsula all the way to UBC and beyond. Cyclists came from the Island and Northern BC for custom bike fits. This past month we saw clients from the Arthritis Society and even from the NHL!

In summary, July was an exciting month at Physiomoves because of the variety of people we had the opportunity to work with. Thank you for trusting us to help you move your body better. Lymphedema is swelling that occurs when lymph fluid collects in areas of the body. This can lead to heaviness, pain, tightness, and risk of infection. It commonly occurs after damage or removal of lymph nodes, especially in individuals with node removal related to breast cancer.

The Lymphapress is a pneumatic pump which uses sequential compression to reduce edema and swelling in the upper or lower extremity. The overall physiotherapy treatment approach for lymphedema combines the Lymphapress with exercise, soft tissue techniques (e.g. massage) and the wearing of compression garments. A doctor's referral is recommended prior to the start of treatment. Treatment of lymphedema is usually advised for 2-3 times per week for at least 4-6 weeks. To book a physiotherapy appointment with Jody to begin treatment of lymphedema, please call us at 604-575-7477.

10 quick questions with Jody Wiebe, Physiotherapist!

Physiomoves Therapist Profile #1:JODY

1. Where did you grow up?
In Fleetwood, Surrey... about 10 minutes up the street from Physiomoves!

2. What is your favourite food?
lasagna

3. What is a little known fact about you?
I love scrapbooking!

4. Any hidden talents?
I can juggle a soccer ball 300 times without dropping it. You can't get much closer to the action than this, and Tyler reports the experience has been incredible. One more shift left on Saturday night to cover the Men's Bronze Medal game. We predict that Canada won't be there for that one- they'll be busy the next day during the Gold medal match. As you've seen from our website, he held the esteemed honour of being selected to represent the UBC Dept of Physical Therapy during the 2010 Olympic Torch Run on Feb. 10, 2010. It was an overwhelming, exhilarating experience, and Tyler was so grateful to see so many patients, students, colleagues, family and friends there to cheer him on.

On Feb. 12th Tyler was asked to come to local school Cambridge Elementary to participate in their Opening Ceremonies. He ran in with the Torch and happily answered questions from the excited students. Afterwards he attended his son's Kindergarten class to let the kids hold the torch.

Feb 13th marks Tyler's first shift on the Host Medical Team at Canada Hockey Place. For the next 2 weeks, Tyler will be rinkside as men and women from around the globe compete in Olympic hockey. When he's not at hockey, Tyler will be busy at the clinic treating clients with the rest of the fabulous Physiomoves team.

Be watching on TV starting Feb. 16th as Tyler makes his national television debut! He will be part of a commercial promoting Physiotherapy c/o the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Tyler was asked to be a part of the commercial along with other Physiotherapy colleagues- can't wait to see it!

We're also anticipating the imminent arrival of a new Dumont. Tyler and his wife are expecting their 3rd child any time now. Stay tuned for that exciting news as well!

What are we up to in early 2010?

2010 is well underway, and Physiomoves is excited about great things happening in and around our clinic and community. We have a couple of new faces- welcome Paige (part-time reception) and Johnny Yiu, our most recent Physiotherapist to join the team. Johnny will be working full time starting in February; his complete bio and photo are posted on our website (www.physiomoves.com). We say farewell to Krystie in February and wish her well in her future endeavours.

Clinic Director Tyler Dumont will be carrying the Olympic torch on Feb. 10 in North Vancouver at ~3:10pm along Grand Boulevard West between 15-17th streets. Come cheer him on or follow coverage live on the web via http://www.ctvolympics.ca/torch/follow-torch/index.html

Tyler is providing occasional therapy coverage for the Surrey Eagles Junior A Hockey Team until the end of their season. He is also continuing to lead mini-workshops for local running and cycling groups (e.g. the Running Room and Team in training). He has attended some great courses recently on advancements in therapy for shoulders and ankles.

Jody, Kristen and Johnny are all continuing their education by completing Orthopaedic division advanced manual therapy courses. These are intense courses, but our Physiotherapists strive to give the most current, advanced treatment possible to our clients. See their website bios for more details.

Barry, our fulltime massage therapist, recently completed the SportMedBC Athlete Functional Assessment course.

We look forward to helping you "move your body better" in 2010! Clinic Director Tyler Dumont will be an Olympic Torch bearer prior to the commencement of the 2010 Olympic Games. Tyler was unaware that he was nominated by the UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Physical Therapy to carry the torch on behalf of the department. Tyler feels very proud and honoured that his colleagues at UBC chose to acknowledge his dedication to the Department of PT in this way. He is a bit worried about tripping and falling, so he's already started practising running with his arm up in the air carrying a 5 lb weight (OK, I'm joking)!

Tyler is also excited to be a part of the medical team at the Men's Hockey venue (GM Place) throughout the Olympics. Let's hope his wife Kelly, who is due February 24 with their 3rd child, can hold off on delivering the baby until after the gold medal game!

Watershed Adventure Race Sept. 19, 2009!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 103px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_h8xUgcrepoY/SqLc4gr2ccI/AAAAAAAAAF4/qQ97Y6h6W-g/s320/watershed+adventure+race+logo.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378103768438436290" />
Come and join the fun at this year's Watershed Adventure Race being held at the Delta Watershed Sept. 19, 2009 at 8:30am. Physiomoves is growing again to meet the need for exceptional Physiotherapy in our community. Clients from around the Lower Mainland are hearing the news that Physiomoves is the best place to go for the most current, evidence-based 1:1 treatment for all orthopedic conditions and sports injuries. The Physiomoves team gives their clients more than a "quick fix"- we teach you about your injury and how to "move your body better" to last a lifetime.

Jody Wiebe will be joining our team starting the week of August 3, 2009. Jody has a Master of Physical Therapy degree from UBC, and has private practice experience in sports injuries, neck/back injuries, paediatrics and pre/post surgical rehabilitation. Here's a brief look at how our therapists continue to strive to provide the highest quality treatment to our clients:

Kristen has also been busy acquiring new hands-on treatment skills. She recently completed the Mulligan Upper Quadrant course and the Orthopaedic Division Level 2 Lower Course. Kristen has also been studying and training under the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute. She has already achieved Level 1, 2A and 3A, and will have her full acupuncture certification by January 2010.

Barry, our Registered Massage Therapist, has been working with the Vancouver Fusion Hockey team, which just won the Midget Female AAA season banner. The team is currently at the Provincial Championships with the hopes of winning. Barry has also been increasing his knowledge of core exercises to provide to his clients through the Carl Petersen "Fit to Play" Core Strengthening DVDs.

Tyler, our Clinic Director, has been busy teaching the UBC Master of Physical Therapy students much of the Orthopaedic curriculum once again this year. He has been invited to present 2 sessions on "cycling injuries" at the Pedorthic Association of Canada Annual Symposium in Kelowna April 3-5. Tyler also recently spoke to a captive audience of runners at the White Rock Running Room, providing them with important tips on "Stretching for Runners".

What is a "Sports Physiotherapist"?

While there are many physiotherapy clinics in the Lower Mainland that provide "sports physiotherapy", there are actually very few therapists that have a certified Sports Physiotherapy designation. These individuals are certified with their Sports Physiotherapy Diploma from Sports Physiotherapy Canada. Physiomoves owner Tyler Dumont happens to be the only true "Sports Physiotherapist" in the South Surrey/White Rock/Cloverdale/Langley areas. To achieve this credential, Tyler has proven a high level of knowledge regarding all aspects of sports physiotherapy (including biomechanics, functional orthopaedic assessment, advanced emergency care, athletic taping, exercise physiology, sports nutrition). He has spent thousands of hours working on-field and travelling with sports teams and individual athletes. Sports Physiotherapists are qualified to work at major International Games, such as the Olympics. Tyler is a Sport Physiotherapy Canada examiner and advisor/mentor, and has worked at events such as the Pan Am Games and Canada Games.

If you have an injury as a result of participating in sport, feel confident knowing that your Physiomoves Physiotherapist is among the very best.

For a list of clinics with true "Sports Physiotherapists" working at them, please check out Harry Toor's website: http://www.vancouversportsphysio.com/ and click on "clinics". Happy Fall!

Massage Therapy has arrived!

We are happy to announce that Barry Bereziak, RMT has joined the Physiomoves team to provide our clients with superior massage therapy services. Kelly (our Mon & Fri p.m. receptionist) and Kelly (Tyler's wife and a registered Occupational Therapist) were the Physiomoves representatives at the YMCA Healthy Kids Day on May 31, 2008.
