Physiomoves: You Ask, We Answer - Ball Hockey

Photo credit: White Rock Ball Hockey Association

CASE STUDY: 14 Year Old Boy
Prepping for Ball Hockey
Problem Areas: Achilles

"My son started ball hockey a couple of years ago with the White Rock Ball Hockey Association. Even though I thought we got good enough running shoes, during both seasons he had to take long breaks because of sore Achilles. I am wondering what we can do better this year"

1.) Do you have any at-home treatment advice?
It sounds like your son has developed Sever’s disease (a full examination should be done to confirm this diagnosis). This is a condition common in active youth during their rapid growth phase, especially when there is sudden increase in running or jumping. The Achilles tendon becomes irritated at its attachment to the heel bone (calcaneus) but will settle down with modified activity and some self-management tips from your Physiotherapist.

2.) What kind of therapy would you recommend? Physio? Massage
A Physiotherapist can properly assess the area and provide treatment suggestions such as modified activity (temporarily reducing the amount of running and jumping while the Achilles tendons settle down), using heel lifts inside the shoes to reduce tension on the Achilles tendons, suggest off-the-shelf orthotics if needed, teach gentle stretching exercises or self-massage techniques using a foam roller or ball, using ice after activity, etc. This program can be used to self-manage the Achilles with some guidance from your Physiotherapist. Massage therapy would certainly be a beneficial treatment in conjunction with physio.

3.) Before ball hockey begins, do you have recommendations for how he can prepare himself for this in hopes to lessen injury potential?
A good warm-up program (including some calf raises) followed by a dynamic stretching routine will help.

4.) Do you think that this has to do with the running shoe or is it more of a physical fitness issue?
Footwear can be an issue, especially if it doesn’t provide the right support or has lost its shock absorption capability. However, this condition is usually related to tendon overload – a sudden increase in running or jumping, compounded by the tight muscles and tendons caused by the athlete’s rapid growth phase. Being generally active and fit may have some protective effect, but young athletes are at risk of tendon issues during their rapid growth phase and any sudden changes in training can cause problems.

Physiomoves Surrey and South Surrey updates

Happy end of February!  The wind is still chilly, but the crocuses are budding and the excitement of spring is just around the corner.

Here at Physiomoves we have had a very busy winter with the opening of our 2nd clinic- now offering physiotherapy in South Surrey - Ocean Park, as well as our "original" Surrey location at Highway 10 and 152 St where we offer Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy.  It's been exciting to introduce Physiomoves to a new neighbourhood!  Thank you to both our loyal and new clients for being so supportive as we train new front staff at both clinics and go through a few adjustments.  Our sincere apologies if you have tried calling the Ocean Park location and left a voicemail message that hasn't been returned.  We had a little issue with our telephone delivery service and weren't aware of messages being left for a little while- but this has resolved thankfully!  Here is a photo of the new clinic front office- please come in and say hello to our main receptionist (Liz) and our Physiotherapists if you're in the Ocean Park neighbourhood.

Our Therapists at both locations are all busy taking various courses and volunteering with sports teams and events on weekends in addition to seeing patients at the clinic.  We will try to post of all the courses they are taking so you can read their up-to-date bios and choose the best Physiotherapist fit for you and your injury.

Recently, UBC announced their Sports Hall of Fame inductees for 2013 and we are proud to spread the word that Jessica Deglau is among them!  She will be awarded at a banquet in April, and we think it's fantastic that her successful swimming career is being recognized.  Click on the link to read about Jessica's many accomplishments: http://www.canadawest.org/news/2013/2/6/CW_0206132006.aspx  Congratulations to Jessica- one of our amazing Ocean Park Physiomoves Physiotherapists!

Please keep in mind that Physiomoves @ Panorama (Hwy 10/152nd) is open on Saturdays and offers early morning and later evening appointments as well as fulltime massage therapy.  If you have any questions, comments, or would like to leave a recommendation we encourage you to do so by calling us (604) 385-4000 (Ocean Park); (604)575-7477 (Panorama) or emailing info@physiomoves.com .  Find us on Facebook and like our page to be eligible to win prizes.  Prizes and contests coming soon... October Update

Tyler Dumont and Tiphanie Ge at the 2012 Great Pumpkin Run

Physiomoves enjoyed another brisk Fall Sunday morning this past weekend at the Peace Arch Hospital Great Pumpkin Run/Walk, cheering on the hundreds of participants and raising money for the ER.  Physiomoves contributed over $600 and Physiotherapists Tyler and Tiphanie provided free post-event massages.  This is a great community event- if you've never tried it, be sure to participate next year!

Jessica Deglau and Christine Campbell
In other news, we are so happy to have Jessica Deglau back as a permanent Physiotherapist at Physiomoves.  She is currently working 2 days/week at the Surrey Physiomoves clinic at Hwy 10/152 st), and will move to the new clinic in Ocean Park when it opens later next month.  Jessica is a brilliant therapist known for her positive energy and experience with high level athletes.  She represented Canada at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics in swimming.  To book an appointment with Jessica, please call the clinic at (604) 575-7477.

A BIG announcement!

Physiomoves Physiotherapy Clinic is excited to announce plans to open their second location in the active community of Ocean Park, BC (South Surrey).

Physiomoves is a rehabilitation clinic with a special focus on sports injuries.  It has grown over the last 5 years in the wonderful area of Panorama Village/Sullivan Station in the heart of Surrey, BC.  Physiomoves has a strong team of Physiotherapists and a loyal clientele who travel from all over the Lower Mainland to receive the very best treatment possible for a variety of orthopaedic conditions.  Now, Physiomoves is ready to grow again, and they are proudly bringing their experience and enthusiasm to South Surrey.

After careful research and years of considering expansion options, Physiomoves Director Tyler Dumont found Ocean Park to have a similar dynamic to that of Panorama Village:  a vibrant, growing community with a passion for health, a special quality of life, and support for local business.

"When we first opened Physiomoves in Panorama Village 5 years ago, I was able to walk to work because my family lived in the area.  We loved being able to support local events and sponsor local teams, and in turn we felt very supported by the community.  We have been able to build a successful business in large part thanks to word of mouth in and among that wonderful neighbourhood." Dumont said. "Now we are ready to do the same thing here in South Surrey.  My wife grew up in Ocean Park, graduated from Earl Marriott Secondary and always hoped to move back to this area.  We are finally here, and we are excited to open our doors and help people of South Surrey regain strength and health through our new Physiomoves clinic.  We have an exceptional team of experienced Physiotherapists all keen to work at the new location. We're thrilled about all the possibilities the area has to offer, and I'm excited to be able to walk to work again on the days I'll be at the new clinic!"  Dumont plans to work Tuesdays and Thursdays at the new location, while continuing to work Monday, Wednesday, Friday and alternating Saturdays at the Hwy 10/152 street location.  Other Physiomoves Physiotherapists who will be working in Ocean Park include Johnny Yiu, Jody Wiebe and  Jessica Deglau.  They are all graduates of the UBC Master of Physical Therapy program, and each therapist brings unique skills and expertise.

Physiomoves will occupy the space next to Schill Insurance located at 1599 128th Street.  The interior design, private treatment rooms, gym space and equipment will all be very modern and top quality.  Construction has already begun with a tentative opening planned for late November 2012.  A follow up announcement will provide details on how and when clients can begin booking appointments in Ocean Park.

A (busy, fun, growing!) Year in Review

Staying true to our mission, we were fully committed to all-around excellence in 2011. Here are some highlights of the past year. As you can see, we took courses, achieved certifications, were active in and around the Cloverdale/ Surrey/ White Rock communities, and selectively hired more of the best and brightest Physiotherapists out there!

Tyler's knowledge of body mechanics, bike fit and injury prevention was videotaped and is now a permanent feature on the informative healthchoices.ca website: http://www.healthchoicesfirst.com/video/cycling/lower-back-pain-and-cycling (there are many others besides this video)

We attended the YMCA Healthy Kids Day and sponsored the Sandcastle City Classic 10km road race in June as well.

  • July: Our baseball pro, Johnny volunteered at the Canada Cup Softball tournament
  • September: Tiphanie Ge joined our Physiotherapy team. Tiphanie is proving to be a major asset at Physiomoves. She is calm and knowledgeable, which works especially well with children and older adults. She is just about licensed to perform acupuncture, something Physiotherapist Kristen (Pummell) Hoffman has been doing at our clinic since she passed all her exams in June 2011. September also saw Kristen tie the knot!
  • October: Our team provided free massages and education to everyone at the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation Great Pumpkin Run- what a beautiful, fun day!
  • November: Johnny, Barry and Tyler sported moustaches and raised over $300 for movember.ca. Thanks for all the votes! Physiomoves helped sponsor the entertainment at the well attended, much loved "Santa at Sullivan" event.
  • December: As if our team wasn't already great, we welcomed Christine (De Pape) Campbell to our team permanently, a former national level Field Hockey player and experienced Physiotherapist. We are also ecstatic to have Jessica Deglau on our team for locum work. Jessica is an international swimming sensation, having competed in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games!

Thank you to all our clients, friends and professional colleagues who trust Physiomoves to help move their bodies better. We are excited to help you stay injury free and achieve all your health goals for 2012!

Autumn Update from Physiomoves!

Happy Fall to all our wonderful supporters in the Surrey area (South Surrey, White Rock, Cloverdale communities and beyond!) Physiomoves had a fantastic summer and early start to the Fall season, with many things to celebrate. We congratulate Kristen on her recent wedding vows; we welcome Tiphanie, our latest and greatest Physiotherapist; we celebrate our 4th birthday (having opened our doors Oct. 1, 2007) and we anxiously await the arrival of Jody's baby!
We are excited to announce that we are a preferred Physiotherapy provider to the Surrey United Soccer Club and we look forward to helping all athletes get back in the game following any injury.
Physiomoves will also be back at this year's Great Pumpkin Run/Walk, benefitting the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation.
We think we have the best therapists in town and we look forward to helping you move your body better. Thanks for checking in, and have a happy Thanksgiving!

Acupuncture now provided by Physiomoves Physiotherapists

Congratulations to Tiphanie Ge and Christine Campbell, who successfully passed the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute written and practical exams.  Tiphanie and Christine are both excited to expand their physical therapy services by offering acupuncture to clients at Physiomoves.
Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of solid acupuncture needles into the skin at specific points in the body to achieve a therapeutic effect. It is safe and effective and often a successful alternative to medications or even surgery. For more information, please visit the website www.afcinstitute.com.

a few kind words and an orange (ball)

Since the month of May is National Physiotherapy month, the wonderful team behind www.notquitesouthsurrey.com offered to do an article about clinic owner Tyler Dumont and Physiomoves. It's under the section "Get to Know..." (http://www.notquitesouthsurrey.com/1439/get-to-know-tyler-from-physiomoves-physiotherapy-clinic/ ) and it's a great article about our fearless leader. What was even more wonderful than the article were the amazing comments that were submitted by a few individuals, including current clients and local reputable personal trainers. They took the time to write really positive messages about the entire team at Physiomoves, and it makes us feel very proud (and grateful for such amazing people to treat and work with in this community!)
Take a moment to read it if you get a chance (called "Get to know...Tyler from Physiomoves Physiotherapy Clinic"). And feel free to add your comments here or at the end of the article. It may even win you a prize! This month we are giving away a prize on behalf of the http://www.notquitesouthsurrey.com/ website, including an orange therapy ball, foam roller and a free massage from our RMT Barry Bereziak for anyone who leaves any comments on that fantastic website.

Functional Movement Screen

A few weeks ago, Physiomoves therapists attended a 3 day course with the goal of advancing their knowledge and skills in the areas of assessment and injury prevention. Heather, Jody, Johnny and Tyler obtained both the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) Certification and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) Certification.

The FMS is an exciting tool that allows your therapist to observe you perform seven movement tests that are key to normal function. A score is then generated which identifies the areas a person needs to target (e.g. stability or mobility of a particular region of the body. The FMS is used to identify people who are at risk of injury during physical training. Your therapist can prescribe a corrective exercise program to address your mobility and/or stability deficits based on your results of the FMS screen. The FMS score also predicts an athlete's performance capability. This tool can be used prior to starting a training program or at the end of your rehabilitation program. The SFMA is a more advanced screening tool that can only be studied and used by healthcare practioners such as Physiotherapists. This particular assessment is similar to an indepth orthopaedic exam. The SFMA is very useful in determining what movement patterns need to be corrected and how to prescribe the most appropriate corrective exercises.

Physiomoves is excited to be able to offer these new services to patients, athletes and sports teams who are interested in optimizing performance and reducing the risk of injury.

Visit www.functionalmovement.com for more information.

K-Taping now available at Physiomoves

Physiotherapists Kristen Pummell and Tyler Dumont recently completed an intensive weekend K-Taping Pro Course in Vancouver, BC. K-Tape is an elastic tape that is water resistant, breathable and can be worn up to 7 days. K-Tape has 2 effects: 1) it stimulates blood flow and lymph flow to aid in the healing process and 2) it stimulates skin receptors to reduce pain and help the body sense position and movement. K-Taping can be used in the treatment of a variety of conditions such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, ligament sprains and muscle strains (see http://www.k-taping.eu/ for more information). K-Taping is now in stock at Physiomoves and can be offered to our clients.
Do you suffer from headaches? Physiotherapist Heather Johnstone is looking forward to an upcoming course that will give her advanced skills in treating cervicogenic headaches (headaches caused by neck posture/injury).

Friday, October 29, 2010

Welcome Heather!

A warm welcome to Heather Johnstone, who started working at Physiomoves this week! Heather earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree from UBC after completing a Bachelor of Human Kinetics in Exercise Science. After teaching her at UBC and mentoring her on a practicum at Physiomoves, clinic owner Tyler Dumont knew she would be a perfect fit here.

Heather competed in soccer, softball and volleyball before turning to endurance sports. She has been running and doing triathlons for over 5 years and is training for Ironman Canada 2011!

To book a Physiotherapy appointment with Heather, please call us at 604-575-7477.

Physiomoves update

Happy Autumn! We love the Fall season- the smell of the crisp, cooler air, the many colours on the trees, and the busy-ness of back to school and activities.

This month, therapists from Physiomoves have provided on-field therapy to young soccer players in our community. We also hosted a "Principles of Bike Fit and Treatment of Cycling Injuries" workshop for Physiotherapists from around the Lower Mainland last weekend at our clinic. We warmly welcome our new main receptionist, Kelsey, who started fulltime as well.

We are accepting new clients of any age and condition. If you have an injury related to an auto accident, work, sports or aging- we would be happy to help you get back to moving your body better. Please give us a call, and Kelsey will set you up with a Physiotherapist and/or Massage Therapist who have the skills and expertise to treat your injured body part.
